Editorial Policies

Open SUNY Textbooks publishes undergraduate and graduate educational texts and readers in a variety of subjects written by SUNY Faculty. While we seek to publish works that have high impact–books in general subjects offered across SUNY Campuses–we also publish texts supporting specialized upper level courses.  We are not currently accepting new textbook proposals.

Peer review process

Open SUNY Textbook Reviewers provide a peer review process that is essential to creating and adopting high-quality open textbooks. Manuscripts accepted in the first round of proposals receive one round of peer review, and manuscripts accepted in the second round will receive reviews by two faculty experts in relevant fields.

Peer reviewers are asked to evaluate textbook manuscripts for validity and educational significance of content and effectiveness as a teaching resource.

Open SUNY Textbooks conducts attributed peer reviews, as well as offering some reviewer’s comments as an open peer review. These comments appear in each text as “Reviewer’s Notes,” and provide context for professors considering adopting the open textbook for their course. These notes are designed to aid readers in determining the text’s applicability, strengths, and relevance.

If you are interested in serving as a peer reviewer or are currently a peer reviewer, see our Reviewer Info page.
